If you’re a huge fan of art or just a huge fan of mini vacations in warm places then Art Basel Miami is for you. Art Basel is a premier art show (one of the largest in the world) and there are only four locations. Luckily, Miami Beach and Wynwood in Florida are two of them and the show typically is held the first weekend in December.
The other shows are held in Basel, Switzerland and Hong Kong, China so this is a big deal. Socialites, artists, and regular people alike travel from all over the world to view the galleries and purchase art from their favorite artists or a new and upcoming one. There are hundreds of galleries spread out across Miami Beach and South Beach and also throughout the town and Wynwood district. Most of the art is contemporary, modern, and post modern, but there is something for everyone. Some of the artists are even present to discuss their work with fans and future clients.
Be prepared to see quite a few celebrities if you are able to make it down. I saw Jon Bon Jovi walking around, Kylie Jenner and Tyga were spotted at Club Eleven on the night I was there, and many other famous people from around the globe were present as well. I’ll be honest and tell you that this will not be a cheap weekend, but definitely an unforgettable one. Each of the galleries usually charges an entrance fee (approximately 25-75 dollars), but there are some free ones that you can just walk into and spectate. Not only are there traditional galleries, but there are also furniture shows and decor galleries to browse as well.
Be sure to book flights and hotels well in advance for this weekend as everything is usually sold out, or really really expensive at the last minute. One hotel I’d recommend trying is the Faena on Miami Beach, but it’s very pricey. The decor and atmosphere is incredible, and I’d really recommend at least making it there for dinner or lunch one day (make a reservation!!!!).
I have to say this was an incredible weekend for me this year and although it was costly it was so worth it. I made so many connections and new contacts during the experience and felt way more cultured afterwards. I was sticker shocked at the price tags on some of the artwork though, including the 15 million dollar gold mammoth statue that was exhibited at the Faena. Check out Art Basel Miami 2017 for an amazing experience and mini vacation!
